National Tradesmen Day Arrives as Gen Z Warms to Skilled-Trades Careers

Since 2011, Americans have celebrated National Tradesmen Day on the third Friday in September. Originally established by Irwin Tools, the holiday serves as a platform to recognize the tradespeople who build, maintain, and repair the country’s physical infrastructure.

This year’s National Tradesmen Day (Sept. 18) arrived at a moment when perceptions of skilled-trades careers appear to be changing for the better, particularly among younger workers.

According to Thumbtack’s 2026 Future of the Skilled Trades Report, 82% of Gen Z workers believe that the skilled trades offer more long-term security than many traditional office jobs. Nearly half have explored or seriously considered entering a skilled trade as concerns grow about the impact of AI adoption on the traditional white-collar career ladder and uncertainty in the broader job market.

These shifts in perception have created an opportunity for painting contractors to show that they can offer viable career pathways to younger workers, along with opportunities to develop valuable specialized skills and launchpads for entrepreneurship and business ownership.

National Tradesmen Day offers a perfect occasion to make that case while recognizing the people who are already doing the work. And last week, painting contractors stepped up to highlight the professionalism and pride that come along with skilled-trade careers.

Pittsburgh Paints posted

“To the pros who turn every wall into a work of art—Happy National Tradesmen Day. Your skill, precision, and pride in the craft keep our homes and spaces looking their best. Here’s to the painters who make it all possible.”

CertaPro Painters added

“Happy National Skilled Tradesman Day! From painters touching up the last paint coat high atop a ladder to carpenters covered in sawdust while building a new deck, your craftsmanship, expertise and dedication to excellence shine in every project. We’re grateful for the pride, professionalism, and care you bring to your work each day. The impact you make on our customers and our community does not go unnoticed. Thank you for all that you do!”

Target Painting and Contracting and Omni Glass & Paint also posted tributes to their staff and to tradespeople across the country.

When Irwin Tools launched National Tradesmen Day 15 years ago, part of its stated purpose was to draw greater attention to professions the company believed were underappreciated, both by society at large and especially among young people starting their careers. Fifteen years later, research suggests that attitudes are changing as Gen Z reconsiders what career success means and how to achieve the right balance between stability and opportunity.

For painting contractors working to recruit and develop the next generation of workers, that shift in attitude offers another reason to celebrate.
