Cleaning the Stables

Smart prep makes tranquil work on a polo farm

In Greek mythology, one of Hercules’ most famous labors was cleaning the stables of King Augeas. Instead of trying to shovel them out by hand, Hercules rerouted two rivers and washed everything away in a single sweep. The story is remembered less for brute strength than for finding a clever solution to a difficult problem.

Restoring an equestrian farm in Florida is not quite that dramatic, but Purpose Painting showed plenty of determination and problem-solving skill of its own.

On this Vero Beach property, 22 stalls across three barns house an entire team of prize-bred polo horses. Between constant wear and tear and Florida’s relentless sun and humidity, the buildings had begun to show their age.

Purpose Painting arrived with a four-person crew and four weeks to bring the property back into shape without disrupting the farm’s daily routine.

The original orange stucco exterior was fading and cracking. Crews washed, patched, and sealed uneven surfaces before coatings ever came into play.

Stucco repairs were completed using synthetic elastomeric patching designed to accommodate movement caused by heat and humidity, a critical step in a climate that cycles between heavy rain and intense sun.

The finish coat was Sherwin-Williams Emerald Rain Refresh in Nebulous White. The lighter color brought the barns and living quarters into greater harmony with the surrounding pasture and sky.

Inside the barns, the challenge shifted to wood surfaces that had never been sealed. It took four days of carefully controlled pressure washing combined with specialized cleaning solutions to remove decades of buildup without damaging the wood grain.

From there, crews applied three coats of semi-transparent stain, spraying and back-rolling each section to work the material into the wood. The system extended across stalls, rafters, ceilings, and the pergola, creating a consistent appearance while adding protection against daily use.

Coordination proved just as important as execution. Work had to move around the horses, not the other way around. Schedules were carefully arranged to keep animals and handlers safe while crews shifted from building to building to keep the farm operating smoothly.

Still, the logistical challenges came with a unique reward.

“The calm, open environment provided a refreshing change of pace, allowing the team to focus on their work without distractions while enjoying mild temperatures and clear skies,” said company owners Salomon and Ashley Velazquez. “This unique combination of tranquility and ideal weather made the experience not only productive but genuinely enjoyable.”
