Survey reveals strong homeowner painting intent

A recent homeowner survey conducted on behalf of Sherwin-Williams suggests demand for residential painting remains healthy, with more than half of homeowners planning to paint part of their home within the next 12 months.

The survey of 1,200 homeowners, conducted by Nielsen Research in conjunction with Sherwin-Williams’ National Painting Week this spring, also offers encouraging news for painting contractors. One in three homeowners said they expect to hire a professional painter in the coming year. Among homeowners who have hired a painting contractor before, that number climbs to 70%, underscoring the importance of turning first-time customers into repeat clients.

The research also found that homeowners who have previously worked with a painting contractor place greater value on professional painting services. Half said they would be willing to spend at least $250 to have a room professionally painted, compared with just 30% of homeowners who have never hired a contractor.

As for what homeowners want painted, bedrooms topped the list, particularly among millennials. The survey also found that nearly half of homeowners had not painted their front door within the past two years, highlighting another opportunity for contractors looking to generate smaller, high-impact projects.

While consumers may be showing signs of being more cost-conscious, the survey suggests the appetite for home improvement remains strong, especially among homeowners who have already experienced the value of hiring a professional.
