An 18th century home gets a hot new coat

TOP JOB: Edina, Minnesota

Company: Nick Slavik Painting and Restoration Co.

“Our company loves old homes and you can feel it in our culture.”

Everything about Nick Slavik Painting and Restoration Co. suggests Old School Cool.

Start with the logo, which looks like it came off a printing press. Then look at his company vehicle, a classic Dodge that looks native to Cuba, not New Prague, Minn.

So if you have an absolutely exquisite home in Minnesota that a renovation with proper car and respect, call Slavik.

Slavik was hired to oversee a complete restoration of the home’s exterior. This included carpentry in partnership with Jaeger Homes; new entry doors custom-made and finished to match the originals from the 1800s; restoration of decorative scrolls over the entryway; and custom-building stained glass window sashes.

Most impressive of all: The work was performed by members of the paint company’s apprenticeship program.

“Our company loves old homes and you can feel it in our culture,” Slavic said. “We also train the mindset of our people to be able to take on these amazing homes.”

The entire project was led by a Master Craftsperson with a relatively young six years in the trade. It took 500+ hours to complete this beautiful red revamp.

Said Slavik: “This project is emblematic of what a bunch of Decent Human Beings can do with the right training, mentorship, support team, and deep knowledge of historic homes.”
