During the ‘80s I worked as a maintenance painter at a hospital. A maintenance technician put a gallon of solvent-based aluminum paint on the paint shaker in our shop and painted half the shop silver when the can burst. The paint shaker was still on, and spraying aluminum paint everywhere when the maintenance worker ran to it to shut it off, so he was covered in paint. He was in no mood for conversation. I rounded up some rags and thinner for him. I showed him how to place the paint-covered rags in a bucket of water. I took a “you made the mess, you clean it up” attitude toward the whole thing, but I did have to help repaint the shop.

I dropped a new worker off at the jobsite and went to the office. Later on the way back to the jobsite, I passed him as he was walking. The crew told me he went to the gas station to go to the restroom. I worked with the crew the rest of the day and he never showed back up.

I was pretty mad when this happened, but I can laugh about it now. I had a guy who didn’t want to work. I sent him to a house with a case of caulk and he said he “ran out” around noon. Knowing it was impossible, I went to investigate. We looked all over for that caulk. Eventually, I gave up and was gazing at the backyard when … low and behold, a fresh pile of dirt in the backyard. He buried seven tubes of brand-new caulk.

A cat walked on a paint can lid of red paint. Cat prints all over the place. Thank god we had drops down because we never could catch that cat.

One of my clients gave me a big block of Dubliner cheese as a tip. It was actually a pretty great tip if I do say so myself.

An elderly man with clear (harmless) mental health issues decided to undress while I was painting his apartment. I finished the job, no problem, all the while chatting about everyday things while his dangle bits were on full display. It was no big deal, it was just a him thing and nothing remotely creepy or I would have left.
