You may have heard that Philadelphia sports fans are unruly. After all, the old Veterans Stadium where the Eagles used to play host to a court and jail onsite to adjudicate bad behavior in the stands.
A house painter in Philadelphia sadly reinforces the stereotype.
A 25-year-old man named Matthew took his fantasy football league to a whole new level when he retaliated with the most unsportsmanlike conduct of all.
Matthew got into what is described as an “online disagreement with a member of his fantasy football group.” The league rival was a student at University of Iowa, and traveled to Norway in August 2023 for a study abroad program.
That’s when “all in good fun” turned into a felony.
Matthew, still seething with anger over his online football beef, called in a false threat to the Norwegian Police Security System.
“On August 15th a man named [Football Rival’s Name] is headed around Oslo and has a shooting planned with multiple people on his side involved,” Matthew wrote to the Norwegian authorities. “They plan to take as many as they can at a concert and then head to a department store.
“I just can’t have random people dying on my conscience,” Matthew continued. “Please be ready. He is around 5-foot-7, redhead, coming from America, on the 10th or 11th I believe. He should have weapons with him. Please be careful.”
Suffice to say, authorities tend to take these kinds of tips seriously.
This incident appears to be a form of swatting, a crime in which the perpetrator calls the SWAT team to show up at the victim’s house. In the worst cases, first responders have actually shot and killed unarmed victims who were hyped as mass killers.
But that wasn’t enough for Matthew. After the Norway threat was exposed as a hoax, Matthew doubled down with an email to the University of Iowa warning of a bomb on campus. The tip came with a screenshot of a fantasy football chat group (of course) implicating the victim as the supposed bomber.
Last week, Matthew pleaded guilty to two counts of interstate and foreign communication of a threat to injure for his crimes.
The punishment could be a maximum of five years in prison but is more likely to be 15 months of home confinement, according to his defense attorney.
“I don’t know what he was thinking,” the attorney said. “It was definitely not smart.”
When your own defense attorney is calling you an idiot, you know you screwed up royally.
I wish I could say this guy was the worst Philadelphia sports fan, but sadly, this is par for the course. Philly fans have been arrested for punching a police horse, intentionally projectile vomiting, and chucking batteries at opposing outfielders.
But this guy is an outlier for house painters, who typically have better things to do than feud over fantasy football.
