Sherwin-Williams is an important part of getting a lot of commercial buildings ready to open.
So it is with no small irony that the company has faced a series of unfortunate events that have stalled the opening of its forthcoming headquarters.
The opening ceremony, which had been slated for March 12, has now been pushed back to Oct. 22 due to construction delays, according to Cleveland Magazine.
The delay is on account of a problem with the fire protectant that was applied to the building’s structural steel.
In this case, however, you could hardly blame Sherwin-Williams, nor the lead contractor on the construction project.
A third-party certification provider apparently changed its listing for the fire protectant coating in July 2024. Under the new listing, the applied thickness of the coating has increased in order to achieve the required fire ratings.
So the project that was originally within the specifications has now gone out of the specifications after the coating was already applied.
That means S-W had to push back the opening so the crew could go back in and apply more of the fire protectant.
It’s just the latest bad luck for what has at times seemed a star-crossed facility. In March of last year, the opening was left up in the air for sometime in 2025. It was later clarified to be March, but the fire protectant issue means October with the possibility to slip into 2026.
Sherwin-Williams has an HQ project page if you want to follow along with the efforts.
