Standing up a massive hotel and convention center

Cherry Coatings – “The first time I walked in I was overwhelmed.”
The Lowes Arlington Hotel and Convention Center is a major new destination spot in the heart of Arlington, Texas.
With a total of 266,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, the hotel is well-equipped to handle any size event. Getting it ready in time for the 2024 grand opening was no small feat.
“The first time I walked in I was overwhelmed,” said Greg Lee, the project manager for Cherry Coatings.
The sheer scale of the work is astounding. The Cherry crew did drywall finishing and ceiling skimming in all 888 of the guest rooms. They painted the exterior of the building, which includes 22 stories.
There were 160,000 yards of wallcovering in stairwells and emergency exit routes. The garage required epoxy primer, a urethane base coat, an aliphatic urethane topcoat, and polished concrete.
That kind of work doesn’t happen overnight. This project took a total of three years, completing in February 2024. Up to 75 crew members worked on the project during peak production.
“The biggest challenge was getting the project off the ground,” the company said. “Coming out of the COVID era and facing materials shortages made staying in sequence quite difficult.”
To keep it all straight, the team used a visual production plan for facilitating communication. “By placing schedule, material needs, and goals for the week on a wall for all employees to see, our team is more effective and it leads to fewer misunderstandings.”
All told, carrying this project to fruition required the coordination of over 1,000 tradespeople.
“Seeing a job of that size, with that much impact on the community, be built from the ground up, was great,” the company said. “I think the most impressive thing is that nowadays you can’t find a room in that place – all 888 of them are booked.”
