Battling a downpour to finish a historic project

Nothing could stop Korth & Shannahan Painting from getting the job done. not even the rain.

The company was hired to restain a historic cedar shake home. Foreman Victor Valdez and his crew of full-time professional painters were tasked with changing the color from a faded light brown to a deep mahogany.

The job got off to a tricky start. The fragile shingling had to be washed at low pressure and close range. It took the crew two full days to wash the whole outside of the home, but the cedar remained undamaged. Faced with a rain day, Valdez and his crew smartly decided to initiate washing with a bleach solution, taking advantage of the natural showers.

“One unforeseen challenge was the sheer volume of product that this house took,” said Olivia Korth, director of marketing and recruitment. “Between the priming and finish coats, our painters went through almost twice as much oil stain as our estimator originally anticipated. The shingles just soaked up more primer and stain than expected.”

In addition to the staining, Korth & Shannahan did trim work—scraping, prepping, and caulking all seams. Holes and divots were filled with two-component epoxy, then sanded down to a feathered blended finish before being primed and painted with Benjamin moore’s Semi-gloss Acrylic in sage green.

Korth stresses that safety was of the utmost importance on this worksite.

“This job had some tricky angle work on the front of the home, as well as some work on the roofline. Our field supervisor made sure to stop by during the job to check in on jobsite safety standards, quality, and progress.”

The customer certainly seems pleased—they’ve already hired Korth & Shannahan to do the interior.

“We’re taking this as a sign that the customer is extremely happy with our team,” Korth said. “Victor and his team are expected to kick off part two of this job in early June.”
