Is Sherwin-Williams buying BASF Coatings?

Sherwin-Williams wasn’t kidding when it said they want to cover the earth.

Hot on the heels of news this week that BASF is looking to sell its coatings business, now comes word that Sherwin-Williams may be readying a bid as part of a wave of international expansion.

This week started with news that BASF was making plans to sell its paint division at a valuation of $6.8 million.

BASF is a leading chemical company located in Germany that produces a wide range of coatings, including automotive, decorative paints, and surface treatments for metal, plastic, and glass.

In a press release, BASF confirmed that it was considering options for the coatings unit.

“The intention is to explore strategic options for the remaining Coatings activities in one package,” the company said. “There is high interest in the market from strategic buyers, from private equity, and from consortia.”

BASF certainly doesn’t show signs of financial distress. While the company has shown recent weakness in unrelated segments like Agricultural Solutions, the company reported Q1 sales of $19.3 billion, off only $156 million from last year.

That said, the company is facing some potential overhang from U.S. tariffs.

BASF reported that tariffs have already taken a toll on production within the chemical industry. The company said that 80% of its American sales were products made in the U.S. and not subject to tariffs.

A number of companies have expressed interest in buying BASF’s coating business in the wake of the for-sale reports, according to Bloomberg News. CVC Capital Partners and Lone Star Funds both may be weighing bids.

The most interesting potential suitor, however, is a rumored play by Carlyle Group and Sherwin-Williams.

Crain’s Cleveland Business, a reputable financial newspaper in Cleveland–the site of Sherwin-Williams headquarters–reported the rumored bid on Monday.

If it comes to pass, this purchase would be the latest in Sherwin-Williams acquisition spree scooping up foreign markets. In February, we told you about the Cleveland-based company’s purchase of Suvinil, a Brazilian architectural coatings company in a deal valued at $1.15 billion.
